Prepare for Birth
Yoga for Pregnancy
What is yoga for pregnancy?
Yoga is an ancient form of exercise involving postures which stimulate the circulation, strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, focus the mind and energise the spirit. Yoga works the whole body and also improves stamina and balance and facilitates relaxation – both physical and mental.
In yoga for pregnancy we take yoga and turn it into a specialised, highly focused and very gentle form, absolutely perfect for pregnant women.
We make all movements safe for you and your baby for every stage of your pregnancy.
Pregnancy yoga allows you time to focus on your body, on your baby and to clear your mind ready for the birth.
Classes are interwoven with active birth education, facts to help you make the right birth choices for you, discussion of your birth anatomy, coping with labour, breath and mental focus, and work in pairs including massage and relaxation.
Who is it for?
These classes are only for pregnant women, no partners allowed! As a general rule this gentle form of yoga is suitable for almost every woman.
You can start classes from 14 weeks gestation onwards. It is best to start at this time and continue through to right before you give birth. You can find more information on yoga for pregnancy classes by emailing me and you can download all the forms you need to fill in for enrolment from the links at the side of this page. Once you are sure you’d like a place reserved for you in the class, please let me know by email. Then bring your completed paperwork and a cheque/cash payment for the full term with you to your first class. I will let you know the amount when you advise me that you need a space in the class.
What do I need?
Loose, comfortable clothing with a little bit of stretch in it is all that is needed – you do not need to buy specialist yoga clothing unless you want to. However, you will need your own yoga mat and birthing ball. You will need your yoga mat and birthing ball prior to your first class and the ball must be blown up ready for class. It is possible to borrow balls for the first couple of weeks but it is better to have your own ball which you can take home from you are there are important postural benefits of having the ball with you at home and/or your office for the whole length of your pregnancy.
Yoga for pregnancy class is from 6.15pm every Friday at the Fitness Works fitness studio (next to WestEnd Hair & Beauty) on Dudley Road, B63 3NJ. Classes run til 7.45pm but may run on slightly longer if there has been a guest speaker or returning mum who has come to talk at the end of the class.
